It means a lot to me that you love Leonard Cohen. I can’t explain why, but it is so. I am working my way through his poetry books, and have I’m Your Man, his biography, on my delicious stack. I think I am inspired today to listen to him while working on this final stretch on my novel. It is always a certain mood to do so; I think today is that mood.

Thank you for your sensitive and thoughtful take on the #metoo movement. That was both important and painful for me, because back in 1991, as a 19-year-old kid, I was neither seen nor heard because “sexual assault” was not on the books in North Carolina, and there were no physical marks to show. If you would like to read my poem about it, I would be honored: https://theremightbecupcakes.substack.com/p/hounds-of-love

Bought your latest back on June 3. ❤️

I need to make my list now. Thanks for reminding and inspiring me!

Hey! Glad you ended up reading This is Pleasure!!! It reminded me a lot of I'm The Girl in its complications and refusal to simplify.

I'm looking forward to checking out your other recs--especially the Yoshimoto collection. Have you read Sayaka Murata's Earthlings? Proceed with caution!

Lynch is so fascinating, as is his work. You should give Twin Peaks a try if you haven't already--if nothing else, the third season is a visual masterpiece. Wallace makes up a bunch of facts in here (as per usual with his nonfiction), but this is still a pretty good read: http://www.lynchnet.com/lh/lhpremiere.html

Unexpected, but my favorite book so far this year was probably Mrs. Caliban, a very strange little novella: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/03/04/the-hallucinatory-realism-of-rachel-ingalls

Looking forward to your new work!

Ah I love these recommendations lists & how everyone shares their own 😄. So here's mine:

Reading: I haven't actually read any new books this year, just been rereading favorites, currently on the last book of Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad. The whole series (six books) is excellent & worth reading but if I have to narrow it down the secret place & in the woods are my recommendations. Megan Abbott has a new book out in July so I'm looking forward to that. I also read a couple of interesting articles: one was about the evolution of butterflies- how they started of as a bunch of brave moths who broke away from the norm! ( https://scitechdaily.com/the-origin-of-butterflies-a-100-million-year-old-mystery-unraveled/) And the other was about a sanctuary for disabled goats who have a giant Teddy bear called Kevin who they snuggle up to (https://people.com/pets/big-teddy-bear-named-kevin-gives-cuddles-to-rescue-goats/)

Watching: Series: Beef (so entertaining). Movies - Ladybird (my kind of funny), Pearl (really appreciate the depth to her character and how she's not another 2 dimensional killer, especially in her monologue. Plus all the mirroring & foreshadowing for X, and the fact it has a whole wizard of oz feel to it!), The Menu (oh the pretentiousness!), The bad batch (really interesting concept, can imagine this as an awesome short story if you know what I mean? Great imagery & the fact there's no dialogue for a good chunk of the start of the movie and I didn't even notice!) Best rewatches - Adventure Land & Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.

Listening: Albums: The Happy Star - Lexie Lu, Let's hope hetero's fail, learn and retire - Alice Longyu Gao. Singles: Yeule - Sulky Baby. I've been listening to lots of other amazing things too but these are the ones released this year 😊

Glad your writing is going well & hope your summer is awesome ❤
