I've alway admired the way David Lynch makes things that are completely uniquely Lynch, and also seems to do what he wants (weather forcasts during covid lock down!). Twin Peaks is iconic and has influenced so many things, it's been on my rewatch list for a while now (so little time 😭). He sure knows how to end a season doesn't he 😱😱. It's been really interesting hearing his insights from you, so thank you for sharing 😊. And of course (of course of course of course!) I'm a hundred percent there for living a life of being true to your/myself (& other people being true to themselves).
He is so committed to being himself in life and in art and it is really inspiring! I think you'd really love his memoir--it's half a biography and he responds to each chapter with how he remembers what happened against the recollections! I tried a Twin Peaks watch directly after I read it and like you... have found it's a lot to invest in lmao but still--it's nearly perfect!
Ah it definitely is 😊 Do you think having read his memoir gave you more of an insight into some of the twin Peaks stuff? (Gotta light actually gave me a headache the first time I watched it 🤭😖😏 but I do recognise it as something purely true to Lynch and it was definitely well done).
it did! I was really surprised to learn about how checked out he became in the second season which I don't know why--since that's when it felt so lost. but he had pretty much moved on at that point and the cast were over it because he wasn't around as much... having to navigate all the studio pressures and expectations made it more interesting and made some of the more questionable decisions make sense--revealing leland early on etc!
Yeah, I think I remember reading that it was a clash of what the studio wanted versus what he wanted ☹ which is a real shame. I liked the Audrey & Cooper chemistry and the celebrities the studio wanted bringing in as new love interests for these two characters really felt awkward and unnecessary. Plus other stuff like you mentioned with Leland etc.
Smart af, as usual. You already know how I feel about all this-- in the past when I've had to account for, uh, a particular creative choice I made, I reminded myself that all my life I will carry my books around, and they will be flawed, but they should be flawed in a way that's mine. Because at the end of the day when the internet and my email and my spouse and dog go to sleep, I'm alone with myself, and I must make the choices that allow me to feel at rest, if not perfectly satisfied. May we die only once, if we must die at all!

"To feel at rest" is a perfect way to put it 😭 I love that.
Meanwhile I'm lookin at David Lynch's three deaths and thinking . . . amateur. 😂
Really appreciate your thoughts on these issues.
Thank you for reading them, Liz! I really appreciate that.
Creative death being an impermanent state of being gives me hope 🙏🏻
Creative industries' greatest fear is the creatives realizing they're Unkillable but GUESS WHAT!! WE ARE!
Your newsletters always make me think. I love that.
THANK YOU. That is so kind and I appreciate it. <3
